Parliament deputy speaker Mohamed Abou El-Enein, the Honorary President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) participated in a meeting of a high-level delegation from PAM with the President of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis.

Following the presentation of PAM activities, discussions focused on how the Assembly can further support the work of the UNGA to face current unprecedented security challenges and looming apocalyptic scenarios.

President Francis stressed the role of PAM as a unique instrument of parliamentary diplomacy to keep open channels of communication and cooperation, that would otherwise be unthinkable.

Regarding the Middle East crisis, he highlighted the need for the parties to exercise maximum restraint towards de-escalation, in order to reach a lasting political solution, the only way to avoid recurring confrontations, and requested PAM to assist the UN and international community in deflating, through judgment and courage, potential risks and extensive risks nourished by propaganda and radical narrative.

PAM reiterated its steadfast support for immediate critical peace negotiations, release of all hostages, protection of all civilians, and future reconstruction in Gaza and OPTs.

Discussions also encompassed the ongoing PAM/UN cooperation on threats posed by the malicious use of AI, preparations for the Summit of the Future, the ongoing Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine, and the stagnating national reconciliation efforts in Libya, and support for UNIFIL

operations.

In addition, PAM delegates pledged their full support for the #UNGAChooseSustainability campaign to adopt sustainable habits and actions, individually and as an organization, in relation to, inter alia, climate change, food security, migrations and education.
