Nine people, including eight from sub-Saharan African countries, were killed in a traffic accident in Tunisia on Monday evening, according to Regional Director of Civil Protection.

Five other people were injured in the accident.

The traffic accident occurred on the road linking the cities of Nasrallah and Manzil Al-Mahiri in Kairouan, Regional Director of Civil Protection in Kairouan, Hamdi Al-Wassif, said in a statement broadcast Monday morning by local radio "Mosaique FM."

This type of accident is common in Tunisia, especially in rural areas where many workers use inappropriate but low-cost means of transportation to go to work in the fields, according to what Agence France-Presse reported.

Tunisia, with a population of about 12 million people, records a high rate of road deaths due to poor infrastructure conditions, aging cars, and reckless driving.

According to the National Traffic Safety Observatory, since the beginning of the year, more than 850 people have died in traffic accidents, an increase of 17.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
