Nine people were injured on Wednesday in a car-ramming incident in western France.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on X that the driver struck pedestrians and cyclists on the island of Oléron, a popular tourist destination off the Atlantic coast.
He added that two of the injured are currently in intensive care.
The driver was arrested at the scene, and an investigation has been opened.
Thibault Brechkoff, the mayor of Dolus-d’Oléron, told BFM TV that around nine people were hurt in the incident, noting that the suspect is approximately 30 years old.
According to BFM TV, the suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” when he was detained.
Le Parisien also reported the same, adding that investigators are considering the possibility that the suspect may have a mental health condition.
French media reported that the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office is not handling the case at this stage, and has not yet issued comment.
