African teams underlined their growing strength on the global stage during the FIFA World Cup 2026 group phase, dominating their Asian counterparts in head-to-head encounters while producing a record-breaking qualification campaign.

The group stage featured seven direct clashes between African and Asian nations, with African sides emerging victorious in four matches, while Asian teams managed just one win.

The remaining two encounters ended in draws, highlighting Africa's superiority throughout the opening round of the tournament.

Among the standout results, Senegal delivered the biggest statement with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq, while DR Congo overturned an early deficit to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 and secure a historic place in the Round of 32.

Algeria also earned an important victory over Jordan, South Africa edged South Korea 1-0, Japan claimed Asia's only win over African opposition with a 4-0 triumph against Tunisia, while Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran and Cape Verde shared a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia.

Africa's success extended beyond the direct continental matchups. Nine of the continent's ten representatives advanced to the Round of 32, giving Africa an impressive 90 percent qualification rate, the highest among all confederations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The qualified African nations are Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Ghana, DR Congo, and Cape Verde. Tunisia was the only African team eliminated in the group stage after finishing bottom of its group.

The remarkable campaign reflects the continued rise of African football on the world stage, with the continent not only excelling against Asian opposition but also sending more teams into the knockout rounds than any other confederation in this edition of the FIFA World Cup.
