A stabbing rampage carried out by an armed man left 8 people dead and one injured in central China, according to state media reports on Friday citing local authorities.
The attack occurred on Thursday in Xiaogan city in Hubei province, as reported by the government-run CCTV channel.
China's official Xinhua agency stated that the injured person's life is not in danger.
Meanwhile, CCTV noted that police apprehended the suspect, a 53-year-old man. He had previously received treatment for mental health issues, the same source clarified, adding that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
China has witnessed a wave of stabbing attacks in recent years, with gun violence incidents being extremely rare in a country where citizens are prohibited from owning firearms.
On Monday, a knife-wielding woman killed two individuals and wounded 4 others at an elementary school in Jiangxi province in central China.
Similarly, a knife attack in early May resulted in the death of two individuals and injuries to 21 others at a hospital in Yunnan province in the southwest.
In August 2023, a man with a history of mental disturbances killed two people and injured 7 others in a knife attack in the same province.
