A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea off the southwest coast of the Cayman Islands, the US Geological Survey announced on Sunday.
ABC News reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 209 kilometers southwest of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System stated that there was no threat to the U.S. mainland but issued a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which was later canceled.
The government of the Dominican Republic also issued a tsunami warning, urging residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground, but this warning was later canceled.
Additionally, authorities in both Cuba and Honduras urged citizens to stay away from beaches.
