Six military personnel, including an officer, were killed in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the extremist group Al-Shabaab on the roadside in southern Somalia, according to local police and officials on Saturday.
The explosion occurred during a patrol near the town of Jowhar, approximately 30 kilometers from the city of Baidoa in the southwest of the country.
Hassan Mohamed, an officer in Baidoa, told AFP over the phone, "Six army personnel, including Colonel Mohamed Diri, were killed instantly." He added that several others were injured, although the exact number was not specified.
Al-Shabaab, linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Last week, the Somali government reported the killing of five soldiers in a clash that resulted in the deaths of about 50 terrorists in Ceel Dheer, north of Mogadishu.
