A fire broke out at a retirement home in Milan early on Friday, resulting in the deaths of six people. Several residents were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. Firefighters were able to rescue dozens of people by evacuating the building immediately.
The retirement home reportedly houses 210 people in the southern part of Milan. Two of the victims' bodies were seen being removed from the three-story building. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
According to the AGI news agency, five of the victims were women aged between 69 and 87, while the sixth was a 73-year-old man. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said the fire seems to have started in a room where two female residents were staying, both of whom were killed.
Although the fire did not spread beyond that room, four other residents died due to smoke inhalation, and two more were in critical condition.
