At least 50 civilians were killed in an attack by suspected jihadists on a village in northern Burkina Faso, government spokesman Lionel Bilgo said on Monday.

He described the killings as a revenge attack.

According to government spokesman Lionel Bilgo, the armed attack is by suspected jihadists.

"The army has so far found 50 bodies" after the village of Seytenga was attacked overnight Saturday, Bilgo said, adding that the toll "may rise."

A security source quoted by Reuters put the death toll at more than 100.

The UN condemned the attack, which led to many victims in a statement on Monday and called on the Burkina Faso authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Earlier, two security and local sources in Burkina Faso reported that at least seven soldiers and a civilian were killed on Thursday, in two suspected attacks by gunmen in eastern and northern the country.

"An attack targeting a military unit in the east of the country killed 7 soldiers, while another attack on a passenger bus in northern the country killed a civilian and injured 12 others," a security source said.

"The military unit in Madgware, the village within the Kumbinga district in the east, was targeted in the early morning by a terrorist attack," the sources added.
