A suicide bombing in northwest Pakistan killed at least five people, including two children and three women, in an attack believed to have targeted a police facility, officials said.

The explosion occurred in Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near Pakistan’s former tribal areas. Authorities said the attacker detonated explosives near a residential building before reaching the intended target, a nearby police station.

Local police official Mohammad Sajjad Khan said the bomber appeared to have acted prematurely, causing civilian casualties instead of striking the security site.

At least four others were injured in the blast, according to officials, who confirmed the death toll.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has intensified assaults on security forces in the region in recent months.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused neighboring Afghanistan of providing safe haven to militants planning cross-border attacks, an allegation the Taliban government denies.
