On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi inaugurated the country's latest naval base on the Mediterranean Sea near the Libyan border.

The base includes a number of commercial piers at a length of 2200 meters and a depth of 17 meters and a watchtower for the port at a height of 29 meters.

The base includes two breakwaters at a length of 3,650 meters, a medical point, fences with monitoring cameras and gates with strong barriers.

The base is an integrated military scope that forms a launching base to protect the ownership and wealth of the Egyptian nation in the Mediterranean Sea.

Marking the inauguration of the base, 47 naval craft were commissioned into service on Saturday, including two Italian frigates, an Egyptian-made frigate, a submarine, 14-speed boats, 28 armoured vessels for carrying commandos and a towing vessel.

Egypt has purchased troop carriers from France, fighter jets from Russia, German submarines and Italian frigates, along with tanks and helicopter gunships that Egypt receives under a US military aid programme that dates back to the late 1970s.
