On Monday, four female football players were killed after being struck by lightning after a storm hit their match in rural Colombia, according to multiple reports.
Jeidy Morales, Daniela Mosquera, Luz Lame and Etelvina Mosquera were struck and killed by the lightning, local outlet Cauca Hoy reported.
The incident took place in the village of El Real, Casas Bajas, located within the town of Cajibio.
The Government Spokesperson Lesly Valencia said: “The women were participating in a football tournament when the emergency occurred,”
“A lightning bolt struck a tree and that was what caused the death of the four women.”
The victims participated in a weekly football championship organized Cajibio’s municipal administration.
Cajibio Mayor Diana Carolina Cabanillas Valencia extended "deepest condolences" to the victims' families and friends.
She said: "We join together in solidarity with their families and friends at this difficult time, sending them our deepest condolences," adding: "May their memory remain in the hearts of those who knew them and may strength be with them through this painful process."
