3 Killed, 50 Injured after Train Collides with Truck in Missouri

Three people were killed and at least 50 others were injured when an "Amtrak" train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago collided with a truck Monday afternoon in the US state of Missouri, Officials reported.

Justin Dunn of the Missouri Highway Patrol, two of the dead were aboard the Southwest Chief train, and the other was in the truck, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Officials said the train, carrying 243 passengers and 12 crew members, collided with a truck blocking a public crossing in southwestern Mendon, Missouri. The collision caused eight cars and two locomotives to derail.

At least 50 people were injured and there were "multiple deaths" after the accident, according to Eric McKenzie, director of the Chariton County Ambulance District, which operates near Mendon.

McKenzie noted that he could not confirm how many people had been killed.

Officials indicated that dozens of injured people from the site of the accident began to flow to local hospitals and that some of them were airlifted in critical condition.

The accident came a day after another "Amtrak" train with a car in California's East Bay, killed at least three people.

In that accident, 85 people were on board the train, which was heading from Stockton to Martinez when the collision occurred.

Officials said there were no reports of injuries among the train's passengers and crew.
