Three people were killed in northern Germany on Saturday when their car plunged into a canal following a head-on collision caused by a dangerous overtaking maneuver, police confirmed.
According to the German news agency DPA, two others sustained serious or critical injuries in the accident, which occurred near the city of Braunschweig.
The victims were traveling in the speeding vehicle that attempted to overtake several cars on the right at excessive speed before colliding with another car and crashing into the Mittelland Canal.
Two passengers in the other car were also injured, one seriously and the other critically. Police said that a total of five vehicles were involved in the incident, leading to a partial road closure.
Emergency services, firefighters, and an air ambulance were deployed to the scene. Early images from the site showed a black car destroyed, its roof nearly torn off, as rescue teams worked along the canal using a boat to secure the wreckage.
