A devastating fire at the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg’s Hohenfelde district has claimed the lives of three patients and left more than 50 others injured, including several in critical condition.
The fire broke out late last night on the ground floor of one of the hospital’s buildings, specifically in a room within the geriatric care wing.
The flames quickly spread to the first floor, while smoke filled all four levels of the affected structure. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, which remains unknown.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, evacuating parts of the hospital to prevent further casualties. Over 160 firefighters were deployed to the scene, using aerial ladders, portable staircases, and smoke protection devices to rescue patients and staff.
According to Hamburg’s fire services, two individuals sustained life-threatening injuries, 16 were seriously injured, and 36 suffered minor injuries. Some of the injured were treated in the hospital’s emergency department, while others were transferred to nearby medical facilities.
Marienkrankenhaus is one of the largest church-affiliated hospitals in northern Germany. It has about 600 beds and provides care to around 93,000 patients annually.
