Twenty-nine people were killed and 19 injured in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca after a passenger bus swerved its path and plunged into a ravine on Wednesday, officials said.

Footage of the site showed the wreckage of the bus, which had toppled on its side, at the bottom of a ravine, and relief workers were deployed at the site.

Oaxaca State Attorney General Bernardo Rodriguez Alamia said in a telephone statement to Agence France-Presse (AFP), "According to an unconfirmed toll, 27 people died, and 17 injured were transferred to several hospitals in the region to receive medical care."

He announced the opening of an investigation into the accident, indicating that preliminary information indicates a mechanical failure.

The Civil Protection Agency in Mexico announced that at least six of the injured were unconscious and in critical condition when they were taken to hospital.
