A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in India’s tourist hub of Goa has killed at least 25 people, including several visitors, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The blaze broke out just after midnight in a venue in North Goa, rapidly filling the building with smoke. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, while Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the incident as a painful day for the state, noting that hotel staff and three or four tourists were among the victims.
Emergency footage showed rescue teams carrying injured people and bodies down a narrow stone staircase as police and medical crews gathered outside. Thick smoke continued to rise from the structure.
Local media, citing police sources, reported that the fire may have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion.
Goa’s fire chief, Nitin F. Raker, told CNN-News18 that many victims died from smoke inhalation in the basement and kitchen after a fireworks display ignited wooden sections of the club, causing the venue to fill with dense smoke.
