England's spectacular 6-4 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff was not only one of the most entertaining matches in the tournament's history, but also a game that rewrote several World Cup and national team records.

The "Three Lions" claimed the bronze medal after producing a remarkable attacking display at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.

England stormed into a commanding 4-0 lead before halftime, only for France to launch an impressive comeback led by Kylian Mbappe.

However, Thomas Tuchel's side held their nerve in the closing stages to seal their highest World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

England made the perfect start when Declan Rice fired home after just three minutes, before Ezri Konsa doubled the lead in the 18th minute.

Bukayo Saka then struck twice in the 37th and 45th minutes to send England into the break with a stunning four-goal advantage.

According to Opta, Rice scored England's fastest goal in a competitive match since Luke Shaw's strike less than two minutes into the UEFA Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The Arsenal midfielder also became the first England player since David Beckham at the 2002 World Cup to provide two assists directly from corner kicks in a single World Cup tournament, underlining his influence from set-piece situations.

France responded strongly after halftime as Kylian Mbappe scored twice, with Bradley Barcola adding another to reduce the deficit.

Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot before Ousmane Dembele pulled one back late for France, while substitute Jude Bellingham rounded off the unforgettable encounter with England's sixth goal deep into stoppage time.

Saka's outstanding performance secured his place in England's football history. The Arsenal winger became only the fourth England player to score a World Cup hat-trick, joining Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker and Harry Kane.

He also became the first player ever to score a hat-trick against France across all competitions since Geoff Hurst achieved the feat in a friendly in 1969, and only the second player to register a World Cup hat-trick against Les Bleus after Brazilian legend Pele in 1958.

The dramatic contest also produced numerous World Cup records. Mbappe became the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 22 World Cup goals, surpassing Lionel Messi, while his tally of 10 goals in Qatar made him the first player to reach double figures in a single World Cup since Gerd Muller scored 10 goals for West Germany in 1970.

The Real Madrid star also became the second player in World Cup history to contribute to at least 14 goals in a single edition of the tournament, recording 10 goals and four assists, behind only France's Just Fontaine, who registered 15 goal contributions in 1958.

France midfielder Michael Olise also enjoyed a historic tournament despite the defeat. His assist for Mbappe took his total to seven in the competition, making him the first player since Raymond Kopa in 1958 to record seven assists in a single World Cup. Five of those assists came for Mbappe, establishing a new record for the most assists from one player to another in a single World Cup.

Saturday's thriller also entered the history books as the highest-scoring third-place playoff ever, surpassing France's 6-3 victory over West Germany in 1958. It was also the first 6-4 result in men's World Cup history and the highest-scoring World Cup match since Hungary's famous 10-1 win over El Salvador in 1982.

For France, the defeat brought a series of unwanted records. Didier Deschamps extended his record as the coach with the most World Cup matches managed (27), but Les Bleus conceded four first-half goals in a major tournament for the first time ever.

They also conceded six goals in a match for the first time since 1960 and suffered consecutive World Cup defeats by a margin of two goals for the first time in their history.

Mbappe, meanwhile, made his 22nd World Cup appearance, the most ever by a player before turning 30, while equalling Hugo Lloris' record of 20 World Cup starts for France.

England's memorable victory not only secured the bronze medal but also confirmed the country's second-best World Cup finish in history, behind only its triumphant 1966 campaign, while delivering one of the greatest spectacles the tournament has ever witnessed.
