Anthony Gordon made history despite England's heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first player representing a Premier League club to score for the Three Lions during the tournament.

England suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday at Atlanta Stadium, ending their hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966.

Gordon, who recently completed a high-profile move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, gave England the lead in the 55th minute, finishing Morgan Rogers' cross to register his maiden World Cup goal.

The goal also secured Gordon a unique place in England's World Cup history, making him the first player competing in the Premier League to score for the national team during the 2026 tournament.

The winger joined England's list of scorers at the tournament alongside Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, who finished as England's top scorer with six goals, and Marcus Rashford, who also found the net once.

Argentina staged a late comeback as Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th minute with a powerful strike before Lautaro Martínez headed home Lionel Messi's cross deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic victory for La Albiceleste.

The win sends Argentina into its second consecutive World Cup final and the seventh in the nation's history, where Lionel Scaloni's side will face Spain in Sunday's championship match.

Meanwhile, England will now turn its attention to the third-place playoff after another painful semifinal exit, despite Gordon's historic individual achievement.
