Argentina secured a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland on Sunday to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The quarter-final clash, held at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, remained level after 90 minutes before the reigning champions struck twice in extra time to seal their place in the last four.

Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead in the 10th minute, heading home from a perfectly delivered Lionel Messi corner.

Switzerland fought back in the second half, with Dan Ndoye equalising in the 67th minute after finishing a well-worked move set up by Ricardo Rodriguez.

With the match heading toward penalties, Julián Álvarez restored Argentina's lead in the 112th minute, unleashing a powerful strike from outside the box that beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Lautaro Martínez added a third goal deep into stoppage time of extra time to secure Argentina's victory and end Switzerland's historic World Cup run.

The result sends Argentina into the semi-finals, where Lionel Scaloni's side will face England, who advanced after defeating Norway.

Argentina entered the match full of confidence after overcoming Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 and maintaining a perfect record in the tournament, winning all five of their matches while scoring 14 goals.

Switzerland, meanwhile, enjoyed their best World Cup campaign in more than seven decades after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, following their penalty shootout victory over Colombia.
