Belgium booked its place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over the United States in the Round of 16 on Monday, setting up a blockbuster showdown with Spain in the last eight.
Charles De Ketelaere gave the Red Devils an early lead in the ninth minute before Malik Tillman equalized for the United States in the 31st minute. Belgium responded immediately, with De Ketelaere restoring the advantage just two minutes later to send his side into halftime leading 2-1.
Belgium maintained control after the break as Hans Vanaken extended the lead in the 57th minute, while Romelu Lukaku sealed the emphatic victory with a stoppage-time goal in the 93rd minute, ending the United States' World Cup campaign.
The Americans entered the match hoping to avenge their Round of 16 defeat to Belgium at the 2014 World Cup, but were unable to contain the Red Devils' clinical attack.
Belgium, which had scored eight goals across its previous two World Cup matches, once again showcased its attacking firepower to comfortably secure a place in the quarterfinals.
Belgium had reached the Round of 16 after defeating Senegal 3-2, while the United States advanced by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0.
The Red Devils will now face Spain in the quarterfinals as both sides continue their pursuit of the 2026 World Cup title.
