Egypt made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium in Texas.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead in the 13th minute with a well-placed header. Australia restored parity in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned a cross into his own net.
Both sides had chances to find a winner during the remainder of normal time and extra time, but neither could break the deadlock, sending the match to penalties.
Egypt held their nerve in the shootout, converting four spot-kicks to Australia's two to seal a historic victory and book their place in the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation's history.
Australia threatened early, striking the crossbar in the fifth minute before Rami Rabia denied a clear goalscoring opportunity moments later. Egypt responded through Ashour's opener, while Omar Marmoush and Mostafa "Zizo" came close to extending the lead before halftime.
In the second half, Marmoush missed a golden opportunity before Australia's equaliser forced the contest into extra time. Despite further chances at both ends, the score remained level until the penalty shootout.
Egypt finished second in Group G with five points after defeating New Zealand and drawing with Belgium and Iran. Australia advanced as runners-up in Group D with four points.
Egypt will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between Argentina and Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
