Morocco secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash on Tuesday.

The Atlas Lions staged a late comeback before holding their nerve from the penalty spot to eliminate one of the tournament's favorites and continue their impressive World Cup campaign.

The Netherlands looked set for victory when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, putting the Dutch within touching distance of the next round.

However, Morocco refused to surrender, with Issa Diop scoring a dramatic equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time to force extra time. Neither side managed to find a winner over the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to penalties.

Morocco converted four of their spot-kicks to seal a 4-3 shootout victory, sparking wild celebrations as they advanced to the Round of 16 while ending the Netherlands' hopes of lifting the trophy.

The victory capped another resilient performance from Walid Regragui's side, who had already impressed during the group stage by drawing 1-1 with Brazil before defeating Scotland 1-0 and Haiti 4-2 to qualify for the knockout rounds.

The Netherlands entered the match after topping their group with seven points, following a 2-2 draw against Japan and victories over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1), but their World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end against a determined Moroccan side.
