Lionel Messi made history on the 12th day of the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer and leading Argentina into the Round of 32.

The Argentine captain scored twice against Austria, taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals and surpassing Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record of 16.

Messi’s milestone came despite an early setback in the match, as he missed a penalty in the opening minutes.

However, he recovered strongly to deliver a decisive brace that secured Argentina’s 2–0 victory and continued their perfect group-stage momentum.

The win ensured Argentina’s qualification to the knockout stage, reinforcing their status as strong contenders for the title.

Elsewhere, France also confirmed their place in the Round of 32 after a 3–0 win over Iraq in a match heavily delayed by weather conditions.

Kylian Mbappé starred for Les Bleus, scoring twice in his 100th international appearance before Ousmane Dembélé added a third goal to seal the result.

Norway continued their impressive form with a 3–2 victory over Senegal, powered once again by Erling Haaland, who scored a brace.

The win marked Norway’s consecutive victories at a World Cup for the first time, confirming their progression alongside France.

Algeria secured a crucial 2–1 victory over Jordan in their second Group J match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, held at the San Francisco Bay Arena.

The result marked Algeria’s first win of the tournament and lifted them to three points, while Jordan’s campaign came to an end in their maiden World Cup appearance.

With these results, the group stage intensified as major contenders moved closer to the knockout rounds, while others faced elimination pressure.
