Senegal secured the first spot in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali in Friday’s quarterfinal match at the Grand Stade in Tangier.

The only goal of the match came from Elimane Ndiaye in the 27th minute, giving Senegal the edge over their West African rivals.

Mali finished the match with ten players after Yves Bissouma was sent off in the 45+3rd minute for receiving a second yellow card.

This marks the third time in the last 15 years that a team has received three red cards in a single edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, following Algeria in 2010 and Ghana in 2012.

Senegal, who won 2022 AFCON , will face the winner of the Egypt vs. Ivory Coast quarterfinal next Wednesday in Tangier, moving one step closer to retaining their continental title.
