South Africa booked their place in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 after edging Zimbabwe 3 to 2 in a thrilling encounter on Monday evening at Marrakech Stadium.
This victory confirmed South Africa’s qualification alongside Egypt from Group C in the tournament currently being held in Morocco and running until January 18.
Bafana Bafana made a fast start to the match and took the lead as early as the seventh minute through Chepang Moriri, putting immediate pressure on Zimbabwe.
The response was swift, however, as Tawanda Maswanhise equalized for Zimbabwe in the 19th minute, restoring balance to an open and competitive first half.
South Africa regained control after the break, with Lyle Foster scoring the second goal in the 50th minute following a well-organized attacking move.
As Zimbabwe pushed forward in search of another equalizer, gaps opened up at the back, allowing South Africa to capitalize late in the game.
Oswin Appollis sealed the victory from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, securing three crucial points for his side.
With this win, South Africa finished the group stage in second place with six points from victories over Angola and Zimbabwe.
Egypt topped the group with seven points, ensuring both teams advanced to the knockout stage.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, exited the tournament after finishing bottom of the group with one point.
Their campaign included a draw against Angola and defeats to Egypt and South Africa under the guidance of Romanian coach Mario Marinica.
Egypt and South Africa now move on to the round of 16 as the top two teams in the group, continuing their quest for continental glory, while Angola and Zimbabwe bow out at the group stage after a disappointing showing.
