2025 AFCON: Egypt Stun S. Africa 1–0, Qualify for Round of 16

Egypt’s first national team secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The game was part of the second round of the group stage of the tournament currently being held in Morocco.

The decisive goal came in the 45th minute, when Mohamed Salah successfully converted a penalty kick, giving the Pharaohs a crucial lead before halftime.

The match was held at Adrar Stadium and witnessed strong competition, with Egypt maintaining their advantage until the final whistle.

In the same context, Egypt and Al Ahly star Mohamed El Shenawy was named Man of the Match.

With this victory, Egypt raised their tally to six points, moving to the top of Group B and officially securing qualification to the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations as group leaders.

Egypt became the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 and also confirmed their position at the top of Group B. 

Even if Egypt were to lose to Angola in the next round and South Africa were to defeat Zambia, Egypt would still finish first in the group due to their advantage in head-to-head results.
