The Egypt national team, led by Hossam Hassan, suffered a 1–0 defeat against Senegal on Wednesday in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal’s winning goal was scored by Sadio Mané in the 78th minute.

As a result, Egypt will play the third-place playoff match next Saturday against the loser of the other semifinal between Morocco and Nigeria.

The match started at a high tempo, with Senegal applying intense early pressure in search of an opening goal.

Egypt defender Hossam Abdelmaguid received a yellow card in the 6th minute. Senegal dominated possession for most of the first half and managed to reach Mohamed El Shenawy’s goal on several occasions, though without creating clear-cut chances.

The first half ended goalless.

At the start of the second half, Hossam Hassan made a substitution, bringing on Mahmoud Trezeguet in place of Ahmed Fattouh at left-back.

Senegal continued to control the flow of the game, and their pressure eventually paid off when Sadio Mané scored with a low shot that beat El Shenawy in the 78th minute.

Following the goal, Hassan introduced Zizo in place of Rami Rabia, before later sending on Mostafa Mohamed instead of Emam Ashour in an attempt to equalize.
