Cameroon secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating South Africa 2–1 on Sunday evening, in a Round of 16 encounter played in Morocco, where the tournament runs until January 18.
The Indomitable Lions opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Junior Tchamadeu, giving Cameroon a 1–0 advantage at halftime after a disciplined first-half performance.
Cameroon struck early in the second half, with Christian Koufani doubling the lead just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, putting South Africa under significant pressure.
Although Evidence Makgopa pulled one back for Bafana Bafana in the 88th minute, the late goal was not enough to spark a comeback, and Cameroon held on to seal qualification.
South Africa had reached the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group B behind Egypt with six points from three matches.
Cameroon, meanwhile, advanced as runners-up in Group F with seven points, level with Ivory Coast but finishing behind on goal difference, as the reigning champions continued their title defense.
With this victory, Cameroon booked a highly anticipated quarterfinal showdown against hosts Morocco.
The match is scheduled to take place on January 9 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, after Morocco edged Tanzania 1–0 in their Round of 16 clash.
