Burkina Faso pulled off a thrilling late comeback to defeat Equatorial Guinea 2–1 on Wednesday evening in the opening round of Group E at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, currently being held in Morocco.

Equatorial Guinea appeared on the verge of a famous victory despite being reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

Basilio Ndong was sent off in the 50th minute after receiving a red card from Egyptian referee Mohamed Maarouf, marking the first dismissal of the tournament.

Even with a numerical disadvantage, Equatorial Guinea took the lead in the 85th minute when Marvin Anieboh scored with a powerful header.

However, the closing minutes produced a stunning turnaround. In the fifth minute of stoppage time (90+5), Georgi Minoungou equalized for Burkina Faso, reigniting hope for his side.

Just three minutes later, in the 98th minute, Edmond Tapsoba struck the winning goal, completing a dramatic comeback and sealing a remarkable victory.

With this result, Burkina Faso secured their first three points and moved to the top of Group E after the opening round. Equatorial Guinea, meanwhile, remain without points and will look to recover in their next group match.

The dramatic ending added early excitement to the Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the tournament and setting the tone for the matches to come in Group E.
