On Tuesday, Aston Villa took a significant step toward reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after securing a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the first leg of the Round of 16.
The English side took an early lead just three minutes into the match through Leon Bailey, but the hosts quickly equalized in the 12th minute with a goal from Maxim De Cuyper, ending the first half in a 1-1 draw.
Aston Villa sealed the win with two late goals. The first came in the 82nd minute through an own goal by Club Brugge defender Brandon Mechele. Then, in the 88th minute, the English side added a third goal from a penalty, converted by Spanish midfielder Marco Asensio, who joined the club on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January.
With this victory, Aston Villa strengthens its chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals ahead of the second leg, which will take place at home on Wednesday, March 12.
