On Tuesday, prestigious PWI revealed its PWI 500 which is the annual ranking for pro wrestlers around the world. The first issued list for 2024 is dedicated to male wrestlers, or women who involved in contests against men.
The criteria is based on Win–loss record, Championships won, Quality of competition, Major feuds, Prominence within a wrestler’s promotion(s), and Overall wrestling ability.
The evaluation period of the latest list is between August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2024.
This year's list is topped by WWE Cody Rhodes who main evented the two nights of WrestleMania 41. The first night was main evented by a tag team match between Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins against The Rock and Roman Reigns. While the second night was main evented by the WWE Unidisputed title between Reigns against Rhodes which ended with the victory of Rhodes who broke the dominance of Reigns, and ended the title reign of the Tribal Chief. The moment described as a new era.
The second on the list was AEW Swerve Strickland. Strickland became the highest black male pro wrestler in the PWI ranking. He had one of the top trending feuds in the scene nowadays with Adam Hangman Page, in addition, he captured the AEW World title early this year to be the first African-American to capture the title.
The third is AEW's Will Ospreay whose 2024 run is divided between NJPW and AEW. Ospreay had several interesting feuds against David Finlay, Swerve Strickland, and MJF. He also participated in several 5-star matches against Bryan Danielson, MJF, and a steel-cage match in NJPW.
Rollins came fourth. He was the first WWE World Heavyweight champion, was involved in Rhodes fued against the Bloodline, and main evented the first night of WrestleMania 41.
In the fifth spot came NJPW's Tetsuya Naito who main evented Wrestle Kingdom for this year and had a major fued against Sanada, and his Top 5 Guys, and won the IWGP world title twice.
WWE's Damian Priest came 6th. Priest had an impressive work as a co-leader of the Judgement Day, in addition, he won 2023 Money in the Bank, and cashed-in the contract to win the WWE World Heavyweight title in WrestleMania 41.
7th came AEW's MJF. MJF became not only the youngest AEW World champion, but also the longest AEW World Champion. In addition, he had a great fueds with Adam Cole, and the story of the devil, Ospreay, and Danial Garcia.
MJF also main-evented AEW All In at London's Wembley Stadium in front of 81,000 people in August 2023, and won the AEW International title in July 2024.
Number 8th spot was for AEW's Jon Moxley. This year's work was mainly with Blackpool Combat Club, and main eventing NJPW's Battle in the Valley in US. Moxley won the IWGP World Heavywieght title. He also main evented AEWXNJPW: the Forbidden Door III.
He also won the AEW International title, and main evented 2023 All Out last September.
WWE's Gunther came 9th on the list. He had several fueds with his WWE Intercontinental title, and became the longest WWE Intercontinental champion. He also had several fueds against Sami Zayn, Chad Gable, and Damian Priest.
He won the WWE World Heavyweight title.
CMLL's Mistico came 10th. He made a lot of international appearances, in addition, he won several CMLL titles, and became the first CMLL opponent to compete against an NJPW star after a long years of lack of communication, and coordination.
Mistico also made several appearances at AEW.
In the same context, AEW's Samoa Joe came 11th, WWE's Zayn came 12, WWE's Drew McIntyre came 13th, AEW's Bryan Danielson came 14th, TNA's Moose came 15th, NJPW's SANADA came 16th, WWE's Jay Uso came 17th, AAA El Hijo del Vikingo came 18th, the independent Mustafa Ali came 19th, AEW's Kazuchika Okada (who moved to AEW from NJPW early this year) came 21st, TNA's Nic Nemeth (FKA Dolph Ziggler) came 22nd, AEW's Adam Copland (FKA Edge) came 23rd, WWE's LA Knight came 27, AEW's Chrsitian Cage came 29th, NJPW's Zack Sabre Jr. (G1 2024 winner) came 33rd, AEW's Adam Page came 42nd, WWE's Rey Mystrio came 45th, WWE's Randy Orton came 55th, WWE's AJ Styles came 66th, AEW's Chris Jericho came 90th, and AEW's Darby Allin came 97th.
