Moments ago, Algeria Kaylia Nemour brought the first gold medal for her country in 2024 Paris Games, and the first for Arab and Africa in the history in Artistic Gymnastics.
Nemour topped the reigning world champion China's Qiu Qiyuan and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist USA's Suni Lee.
Nemour was born in France and was trained by the French Gymnastics Federation.
In 2021, Nemour suffered from a complicated osteochondritis condition in her knees that required multiple surgeries. The injury sidelined her for almost one year.
With just one year to go until the Games, Nemour’s career came to a standstill.
In 2023, Nemour decided to represent Algeria and participated in the African Games to qualify for the world championships.
Success there would then enable her to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics.
She made her world championship debut in 2023 where she finished second on the uneven bars, becoming the first African gymnast to win a world medal.
"I am very happy to have won this medal for Algeria, Nemour said after the competitoin. "I hope I made them proud."
