In the first half, Sweden's Fridolina Rolfo scored the first goal for her team from a penalty.
The second goal came during the second half from Kosovare Asllani.
Home fans had hoped to see their Matildas capture a medal at the tournament after their 3-1 defeat to England in the semi-finals, however, their hopes vanished away.
Regardless of the defeat, Australia have already cemented their legacy at this World Cup.
