2023 FIFAWWC: Morocco Make History by Advancing to Round of 16

Morocco, the Debutants, advance to the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup (FIFAWWC), after defeating Colombia 1-0, on Thursday.

The Atlas Lionesses were put ahead in the game with Anissa Lahmari goal in the first half.

Both teams had various chances in the first half, and Colombia’s Daniela Arias fouled forward Ibtissam Jraidi in the penalty area, giving the Moroccans a genuine scoring opportunity.

Las Cafeteras keeper Catalina Perez dived to her left to stop Ghizlane Chebbak’s kick but midfielder Lahmari made the ball into the net.

Colombia dominated the game to find the equalizer in the second half. The South African team's Daniela Montoya and Lorena Bedoya Durango made various shots towards the nets in 59.

Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi saved a real Colombian threat to the Moroccan nets in 72.

The Atlas Lionesses made history by qualifying, and then just by scoring their first win. By beating Colombia, they knocked Germany out of the tournament.

 The achievement of the Moroccan ladies, came after months after the advancing of the Moroccan soldiers to the Semi-Final of the FIFA World Cup in 2022- Qatar.
