Japan, and Spain became the earliest two nations to advance to the round of the last 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Japanese booked their spot in the knockouts after defeating Costa Rica 2-0, the gaols were scored in two minutes in the first half by Hikaru Naomoto and Aoba Fujino.
Spain also reached the knockouts after hammering Zambia 5-0 in the later match, this means that both teams won't be caught in their final group games.
Japan coach Futoshi Ikeda said: "We did what we needed to do and we did it well,” adding: “Some of the players are at a World Cup for the first time but they are really energetic and that makes me so happy.
“The team is overall working as a unit... the atmosphere is good, the energy is good, the staff also bring positive vibes, and I think that is helping the team too.”
On the other hand, Spanish Coach Jorge Vilda said: “The goal is accomplished. We have won the second game, we have surpassed Japan in goal average, we still have a clean sheet, but it is clear that we have to improve."
Vilda added: “Today the game is better. We have to keep improving and evolving as a team.”
