2019 is the year of success and glory for the handball sport in Egypt. SEE explains the most remarkable moments for the Egyptian national teams and clubs over the year.
From the beginning of the year until almost its end, Egypt recorded illustrious moments in handball. On January 26, the Egyptian handball national team ranked eighth at the 2019 World Men’s Handball Championship, which is considered as the best rank for the Pharaohs since 2001, when they took the fourth position.
Egypt's U-21 Handball team:
On July 28, Egypt's U-21 handball team won the bronze medal at the Men’s Junior U21 World Championship after defeating Portugal 37-27 in the third-place play-off. .
The one-time title holders qualified for the last 16 of this tournament as Group B winners after securing five victories against Australia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, and France.
They advanced to the last eight after snatching a narrow triumph over Serbia 30-29. Egypt made a historic comeback that will be remembered throughout the ages as the Pharaohs skyrocketed themselves to their sixth semi-finals after defeating Norway 29- 27.
Egypt's U-19 handball team:
As the year continues to be one of the illustrious years for Egypt, here is the Pharaohs' U-19 handball national team has added another record for Egypt.
The Pharaohs claimed their first Men’s Youth World Championship title with a four-goal win over Germany in the final game on Sunday, August 18. The African Champions qualified for the final after defeating Portugal 41-36.
The Egyptian national team had delivered an impressive performance during the tournament as they pulled off four victories over Sweden, Chinese Taipei, Canada, and Hungary in the group stage.
However, they suffered only one defeat by the defending champions France in their second game at the tournament.
Zamalek's handball team:
In addition to the national teams, glorious moments were present among the Egyptian clubs and here are Zamalek's men handball team, who added stunning records for Egypt.
The White Knights ended their adventure at the 2019 Super Globe World Championship in the Fifth position after demolishing Qatar’s Al Duhail 33-26 on August, 31.
African Super Cup:
The Whites defeated Al -Ahly in a hard-fought 38-35 game in the African Super Cup to qualify for the Super Globe.
African Men’s Handball Championship:
Zamalek’s handball team won the African Men’s Handball Championship after clinching a hard-fought 33-31 victory over Sporting on Sunday, October 13.
The White Knights went down with a five-goal difference, but they made a historic come back in the last seconds of the game, playing an additional time.
The Whites dominated the game in the additional time, lifting their 12th trophy. They are now topping the list of the teams, that won this title before.
Both teams ended the second half in a 28-28 draw. The White Knights ended the first additional half in a 31-29 victory, before cementing their lead in the second one with 33-31 triumph.
2021 World Men’s Handball Championship:
On October 3, Egypt was announced as the hosts for the 2021 World Men’s Handball Championship.
It the 27th edition of the international tournament and the first to involve 32 teams after it was expanded from 24. This tournament will witness the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first time in the history.
