Severe floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall from the Himalayas have claimed at least 20 lives since Friday in India and Bangladesh, according to Indian authorities on Monday.
In India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya, continuous rainfall and resulting landslides have led to the deaths of 15 people since Friday, causing significant damage across the region, according to the local minister’s office.
In neighboring Bangladesh, which is already prone to flooding due to its low-lying geography, torrential rains have caused water levels to rise, leading to the deaths of five people since Saturday, according to the Ministry of Natural Disaster Management.
The floods have forced at least 20,000 people to evacuate their homes, as the situation continues to unfold in both countries.
The affected regions are now grappling with extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land, as authorities work to provide emergency aid and shelter for those displaced.
Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days, exacerbating the flood situation in these vulnerable areas.
