2 Killed in Train Collision in S. Korea

In the early hours of Friday, a tragic accident occurred at Seoul's Guro Station in South Korea, resulting in the deaths of two workers and injuring another.

According to South Korean officials, The incident occurred when a railway track inspection vehicle collided with a maintenance train.

The workers were on top of the maintenance train, replacing insulating structures when the collision happened at about 2:14 a.m. local time (1714 GMT on Thursday).

The track inspection vehicle was moving on an adjacent track, as reported by the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) and local fire authorities.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap confirmed that two workers, both in their thirties, died at the scene.

Another worker, in his forties, was transported to a nearby hospital with a leg fracture. All three workers were employees of KORAIL.

The collision caused delays for 10 subway trains and 5 high-speed trains, with operations halted for 10 to 30 minutes until services resumed at 5:40 a.m. Normal subway operations were fully restored by 7:00 a.m.

Authorities, including police and KORAIL officials, are investigating the exact cause of the accident.

The Ministry of Labor is also reviewing whether the incident qualifies for penalties under South Korea's Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

Additionally, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has dispatched a response team to the site, pledging a thorough investigation into the adherence to safety regulations and the implementation of measures to prevent future accidents.
