On this day, nineteen years ago, the clear sky of the United States has turned sad due to the most dreadful terror attack that killed nearly 3,000 innocent persons and destroyed the New York's World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

On 11/9/2001 at 10.30 am, nineteen terrorists, affiliating to Al-Qaeda terrorist group, hijacked four US passenger planes and used two of the planes for crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in Manhattan, sending people running for their lives covered in dust and debris.

Meanwhile, 370 kilometres away, American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon building in Virginia at 10.37 am, and United Airlines Flight 93 was crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 111.03 am.

The third plane crashed into the Pentagon, the building that houses the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, in Virginia and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to fight back.

Social media platforms were also awash with emotion, with the hashtag #NeverForget 9/11 trending from the turn of midnight onward.

On Friday, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum will commemorate the lives lost with a ceremony honouring those killed at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and aboard Flight 93 — as well as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Meanwhile, New York city will hold its annual ceremony remembering the people who lost their life in the 9/11 attack today amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As has happened in years past, the names of those killed will be read during Friday's ceremony. Last year, some families of victims infused their own, personal messages of remembrance, inspiration and concern.

In less than two hours, 3000 people had been killed and more than 6000 injured, including hundreds of firefighters and police officers who rushed to the scenes.

After 9/11, the U.S. launched an international military campaign, known as the war on terror, targeting extremist Islamic groups throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

By the end of this fiscal year on September 30, the U.S. will have spent over $6.4 trillion on its post-9/11 military involvement abroad, according to a joint 2019 study from Brown University and Boston University. The study is part of a larger project. Other studies in the collaboration estimated that the conflicts have killed over 800,000 people and displaced 37 million more.

Here are some photos that depict the sufferings of the American people due to the terror attack
