A series of devastating wildfires in southeastern South Korea have claimed at least 18 lives, marking one of the most destructive environmental disasters in the country’s history.

Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that thousands of firefighters have been battling the flames for five consecutive days as the infernos continue to spread beyond predicted models.

The South Korean Ministry of Security reported that in addition to the fatalities, six individuals sustained severe injuries, while 13 others suffered minor wounds.

Acting President Han Duck-soo described the wildfires as causing “unprecedented damage” and noted that the fires are spreading in ways that exceed existing forecasting models.

The fires have primarily impacted the cities of Ulsan and the surrounding Gyeongsang region, with officials warning that containment efforts remain challenging due to strong winds and dry conditions.

In response, the government has escalated the crisis to its highest emergency level, mobilizing a nationwide response to combat the disaster.

The ongoing wildfires have raised concerns about climate change-induced extreme weather events, with South Korea experiencing unusually dry conditions in recent months.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to evacuate and take necessary precautions as firefighting teams continue to battle the relentless blazes.
