At least seventeen people were killed in a bus accident in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, according to police reports released on Saturday.
The crash occurred on Friday when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying around thirty passengers, the state’s traffic police said.
In a statement, authorities explained that the driver had taken the wrong lane, colliding first with roadside rocks and then with a sand barrier, which caused the bus to overturn. The number of injured passengers has not yet been confirmed.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on X, extending his sympathy and solidarity to the families and friends of the victims during what he described as a painful time.
