Seventeen people have died in eastern Brazil after a bus veered off a mountainous road and plunged into a valley in the state of Alagoas, according to local authorities.
Initially, authorities reported that 23 people had been killed in the incident, but this figure was later corrected.
Governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas, confirmed in a statement that the bus fell into a valley more than 20 meters deep, resulting in 17 fatalities and several others being injured.
Local Brazilian media outlets reported that the bus was carrying 40 passengers at the time of the tragic accident.
In response to the disaster, Governor Dantas declared three days of mourning, describing the event as a "tragedy."
The crash occurred in a remote mountainous area known as Serra da Bariga, which is notoriously difficult to access.
