At least 16 people have been killed and 21 injured after an enormous blast in the surroundings of Cairo's Cancer Institute, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

A security source declined to be named told SEE that he completely excludes that this explosion is a terrorist act.

The Ministry said that a blast outside the Institute, located in El Manial area, caused damage to facilities inside the Institute.

The Ministry  added that it had evacuated patients from the Institute following the blast.

On the other hand, the Interior Ministry announced that the blast occurred before midnight and was caused by a car driving outside the Institute in the opposite direction before colliding with up to three other vehicles.

The General Prosecutor ordered an urgent investigation into the causes of the blast.
