Nigeria's emergency management agency announced on Saturday that the death toll from the devastating floods that swept through the town of Mokwa in Niger State, northern Nigeria, has risen to at least 150.
The agency added that the torrential rains triggered severe flooding, which swept away dozens of homes in Mokwa and the surrounding areas.
It also warned that the number of casualties may continue to rise as search and rescue operations persist in the affected regions.
The floods have also displaced more than 3,000 people from their homes and completely destroyed 265 houses.
Additionally, two bridges were washed away. At least 78 people were injured and have been transferred to hospitals for medical treatment.
Nigeria frequently experiences seasonal flooding, which especially impacts communities along the Niger and Benue rivers.
Niger State is considered one of the most flood-prone areas in the country and has witnessed similar disasters in recent years.
