Twelve people have been killed in a closed gold mine in the El Callao region, in southeastern Venezuela, a mining and gold mining region, according to an official of the relief teams.

General Edgar Colina Reyes, the Secretary General of Citizen Security in the State of Bolivar, explained that they entered a mine closed for a long time, noting that the water flooded the mine because of the rain, which deprived the miners of oxygen. He added that they died of respiratory failure.

The same source added that 7 bodies were recovered on Saturday and 5 others on Friday, indicating that they were taken to the morgue to determine their identities.

Gold prospecting and illegal mining are common in southern Venezuela.

The workers of these mines often work in difficult conditions and accidents occur, while criminal gangs control a large part of this sector, according to Agence France-Presse.
