Wildfires scorched the western Canadian hamlet of Lytton, forcing officials to evacuate 1,000 residents in and around the town, news agencies said, amid a historic heatwave in Canada that is thought to have killed hundreds.

In the last 24 hours, 62 new fires have been reported in British Columbia. Almost all of Lytton, which is located 250 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, has been destroyed by fire.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called with Premier John Horgan of British Columbia and assured him of the Canadian government's support for the residents of Lytton.

A total of 250 people were evacuated from Lytton on Wednesday evening, a day after the temperature reached 49.6 degrees Celsius (121 degrees Fahrenheit).

The evacuation order was extended Wednesday night to residents of about 100 properties north of Lytton. So far, no injuries or death related to the fires have been reported.
