A shooting at a rural branch of Panama University resulted in the death of one student and the injury of another on Friday, according to police and university officials.
Pedro Samaniego, the college director, reported that unidentified gunmen arrived at the Veraguas branch of the university, nearly 250 kilometers west of the capital.
The incident occurred while a group of first-year agricultural science students were working on a project.
Héctor Delgado, the police chief in Veraguas, stated in a video message that a car stopped and two individuals exited, opening fire on the group of people on campus.
One of the students, Álvaro Leones, succumbed to fatal injuries, while another student, Aniel Terios, was transported to the hospital.
A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.
Shootings in schools and universities are extremely rare in Panama.
