One person was killed and 13 others injured after an amusement ride collapsed during the Surajkund International Craft Mela in Faridabad, northern India, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. when one side of the “Top Spin” ride detached while in operation. At the time, the ride was carrying more than twenty people. The detached section fell to the ground with force, causing panic among attendees.
During efforts to assist those trapped on the ride, police inspector Jagdish sustained severe injuries after another part of the ride struck him. He was rushed to the hospital but died upon arrival.
Ayush Sinha, Deputy Commissioner of Faridabad, confirmed that nine of the injured were admitted to a private hospital, while four others were treated at the city’s civil hospital.
Authorities have filed an official complaint against the ride operator and launched a formal investigation into the cause of the accident and adherence to safety regulations.
The Surajkund International Craft Mela, one of India’s largest cultural events, celebrated its 39th edition on January 31, with participation from more than 50 countries. Egypt was chosen as the partner country for this year’s festival.
