Under the title “Towards new horizons for assessing the condition, restoration and re-displaying in the museum,” the Egyptian Museum, in cooperation with the French Scientific Institute of Oriental Archaeology (IFAO), launched a project to restore the wooden panels from the Mastaba of Sensi Ra..

Mrs. Sabah Abdel Razek, Director General of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, said that the joint research team prepared a comprehensive study of the paintings, before transferring them to the museum's restoration laboratory, through books and scientific references to develop a vision for the treatment and restoration project, especially those that had not been previously restored. A painting of them was restored in the 1940's.

Dr. Anita Kelis, head of the archaeological studies department at the French Scientific Institute of Oriental Archaeology, said that this project is pided into two phases: the first phase begins in January 2021 and ends in December 2021, and includes the archaeological study of wooden panels, and the identification of the type of wood used in their manufacture.

In addition to microscopic examinations and studies the mechanical physicist to assess its condition, indicating that the first stage ends with identifying and implementing the maintenance and restoration project for the wooden parts.

As for the second phase, Islam Ezzat, who is in charge of the project, said that it will include re-displaying these paintings according to the original context within the “Hassi Ra” mastaba in Saqqara, based on the plans drawn by Jacob de Morgan in 1860 and Edouard Koebel in 1911-1912, as the western corridor was the mastaba includes niches containing wooden panels opposite to the frescoes. Specialists in the arts of the Old Kingdom will study these elements within the scope of the project.
